Frequently asked questions on virtual learning environments (VLEs)

David Grantham, Coventry University

This teaching resource note, published in 2005, is organised around a set of 12 frequently asked questions (FAQs).

The guidelines below are intended for practitioners in the learning and teaching of law, but are not intended to be exhaustive. They are an outline only of what the author has learned thus far from the designing of learning in electronic environments. Arguably, similar tenets of good practice apply equally to learning and teaching online as in face-to-face situations. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. Learning online is not better – it’s just different.

Throughout these notes, in preference to the term ‘lecturer’ or ‘tutor’, the term ‘practitioner’ will be used. This is in recognition of the changing role of those of us who practice in higher education.
